The early morning sun filtering through the trees lit up this Dogwood branch for a minute or two. Since the branch was hanging directly over a creek, I couldn't get very close to it. So I set up my tripod on a rock in the middle of the stream and framed the subject with a 200-500mm lens, set at 500mm. I very much liked the way the sunbeam lit up the flower, but it also was falling on the green leaves directly behind the blossom, which I found a bit distracting. By standing on my tiptoes and holding my hat as high as I could, I was able to throw a little shadow on those leaves. Now the light emphasizes only what I wanted it to: the white flower.
Photographed with a Nikon D200 and Tamron 200-500mm lens on a Gitzo tripod. Exposure was 1/10th second at f/16 at ISO 100.
